“A beautiful fall day. I drove into Boston early, parked the car at Alewife Station, and rode the subway to Park Street. The city was very quiet. I was lucky to see a painter’s sunrise: blue-purple clouds underlit with a reddish light and a gathering glow all along the eastern horizon. “I walked along Boston Common and then headed to the new Copley Place. People on the sidewalks had the up and ready look. I planned to eat a big breakfast at Singleton’s at the Marriott, on the first floor of th
